Week 5 (Tragedy Essay)

Although tragic flaws can lead to increases of self-awareness and self-knowledge, Joseph Wood Krutch's philosophy of tragedy stricken people being happy with the end result is something I disagree with. This is because from every tragic situation, a positive ending does not come to life. For example, take the death of a loved one. The emotions of grief will remain with those who loved him. This can also be represented but the loss of an extremely important piece of jewelry or family arluene, which is something that can never be replaced. “Logic is the art of going wrong with confidence.”It is a normal thing that everyone face a tragedy through their life, however it can sometimes continue to an even worse situation and never get better. Thus proving the idea of Joseph Krutch has many holes within it.

  1. Joseph Krutch isn't completely correct about life, but I found he is correct about visual tragedy. You contributed deeper analysis of him than most though. Also, by arluene, did you mean heirloom?

  2. That line by Joseph Krutch gave me pause too. I didn't think he meant that the character would be happy with the ending, just that the reader wouldn't have been able to think of a better ending. This seems a little difficult to accomplish. I did, however, read a trilogy, "His Dark Materials," that ended amazingly. I couldn't have ended it better. And I consider the ending tragic because it was incredibly sad and unavoidable. I think Krutch meant that the ending is satisfying in every way.
